When we are under stress – whether it is emotional stress from relationships or worry and anxiety – or physical stress from not sleeping or eating well, the stress puts our nervous system in to “danger” mode.
And when we are in danger mode, our higher brain functions, such as creativity and problem solving become inhibited because we have evolved to be stupid and selfish when stressed and in danger.
So when you find yourself focusing on self, or ignoring other people, or struggling to concentrate on the problems you are trying to solve at work, this is a good indication that stress is a problem for you right now.
Learning to manage your stress will help you to improve your decision-making in all areas of your life, whether it’s in relationships, career decisions or eating that chocolate bar, stress has an enormous impact on how we perceive the world and the decisions we make.
